Wearing Masks in Kendo (Revised)

The All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) has allowed the wearing of masks with the nose exposed, based on scientific research, in order to ease breathlessness.

However, there have been some comments regarding this policy, such as the fact that the mask often slips off during practice when the nose is exposed, and that all possible preventative measures should be taken as COVID-19 infections are not yet under control.

Although it is recognized that having the nose exposed is still effective in preventing the spraying of droplets, there is still a risk of inhaling droplets through the nose.

Also, experts have suggested that the risk of infection by exposing one’s nose should be reduced as much as possible, especially when considering the fact that mutated viruses that are more infectious have started to spread.

When compared to the time when the guidelines were first issued, various types of masks for sports and kendo have been developed and are now available. These masks allow easier breathing (they are less suffocating) and it is now possible to wear them with the nose covered without experiencing breathing difficulties.

In consideration of the above, the AJKF has revised its infection prevention guidelines (supplement) to state that “when wearing a mask, the nose should also be covered”.

In order to prevent breathing difficulties and heat stroke, please avoid practicing for long periods of time, take enough breaks, and drink plenty of water.
